Careers: Introduction
Welcome to a few words about Hazlewood Castle. It's history and
eminence indeed sometimes you have to pinch yourself to remind you
of the incredible history attached to such a place.

We officially opened in September 1997 however the Cookery
School opened earlier that year in mid July, and it's first
ever participants walked across the building site on planks
wearing hard hats to the Castle's first ever lessons in cuisine.
Hazlewood took a solid and fraught 18 months of detailed
progressive alterations, conversions, building and demolition
with countless, indeed hundreds, of workmen on site 18 hours
a day, 7 days a week, to get from start to finish. Mains electricity
had to be brought to the Castle, together with mains gas. |

However finish became longer, and the last fundamental part of
the project was held up, making it a difficult start as the restaurant's
opening was delayed.
The Old Orangery had to be rebuilt brick by brick to carefully
match one another, with only the best stones from the best quarries
replicating the originals. All in all a delay of 18 months hit the
scheme which was particularly difficult to manage as the main Castle
had already committed itself to opening with guests, functions,
events galore. Meanwhile, the temporary restaurant won Restaurant
of the Year 1998.
Well, 6 years on Hotel of the Year to include a few awards, and
a few years of trading, Hazlewood is here today with a booming annual
turnover in excess of a couple of million, and over 100 staff on
our books.

It's all about the people. At Hazlewood the customer is King,
they are the boss, they run the place, they hire and fire
us all. Hazlewood's commitment to staffing investment is approaching
a million pounds a year and upwards, far in excess of what
a chain group would probably invest. |
The Castle's business is featured around 4 key areas, the Bedrooms,
the Restaurant, Banqueting and Masterclass. Each is run by its own
independent manager.
Being part of the team at Hazlewood, it is important that the team
manages together. There are few airs and graces, little hierarchy
and everybody gets stuck in with everything. This section of the
