Emma & Dan - April 22nd, 2022

Fresh back from a Caribbean cruise our reservations manager Emma tells us of her wedding at Hazlewood Castle

Emma first met Dan at the local Cricket ground where, through her father Stefan she had been roped in to score the match.

It was love at first sight when Emma clapped eyes on Dan, however shy Dan eluded Emma’s advances. The couple are both from York and through nights out with friends, Emma persisted and finally won her man!

It was during a Mediterranean cruise in 2018 that Dan surprised Emma in bustling St. Marks Square, Venice by dropping to one knee to pop the question, a perfect surprise, as although Emma had her suspicions never in her wildest dreams would she have thought he would propose in such a public place! Passers-by applauded Emma’s “yes” and the couple's wedding journey began.

So, the wedding was originally set for 2020 and we all know what happened next, the pandemic lockdown.

The couple moved the wedding to 2021 hoping they would be able to tie the knot, but alas more restrictions prevented it from happening again.

Third time lucky… Friday, April 22nd, 2022, arrived and the sun broke over a perfect canopy of cherry blossoms.

Emma had always wanted to get married at the Castle and wouldn’t consider any other option, having worked here for several years she had up built a trust with the staff and regular suppliers, she was also really keen for the cherry blossoms to be at their best and she and her sales office colleagues had been on blossom watch over the preceding weeks anxiously awaiting the appearance of that first pink bud. The timing was perfect!

The bride and her bridesmaids got ready in the Lavender suite, where there were plenty of gifts and giggles, a couple of tears, but no nerves, the wait of two years was nearly over.

Getting ready for the wedding

The proud parents looked on as their daughter made the final checks in the mirror, before descending the sweeping staircase and then out to the stunning gardens.

Proud parents, wedding day

The civil ceremony was held in Hazlewood Garden Pagoda in front of 80 friends and family members, where a very (unusually) chilled Dan awaited his bride. The couple wanted to create a relaxed feel to the day and this glorious outdoor setting was just the ticket.

The bride carried a lovely bouquet of pink and baby blue as her father walked her down the aisle.

Civil Ceremony

The couple then had their wedding blessed in the Castle's St. Leonard’s Chapel by Father Ian, this featured a mixing of drinks ceremony, don't worry I hadn't heard of this either.

Father Ian revealed all:

"There is a tradition in France at a wedding where the bride and groom each bring a wine from their family’s vineyard or that best represents their individual qualities and after their vows have been made, the two drinks are mixed together to form a unique and indivisible blend representing their marriage.

Emma and Daniel have brought their own slant to this tradition and I like to ask them to tell you what they have each chosen to represent their own unique qualities..."

A live saxophonist played gentle music during the ceremony.

Mixing of drinks

With the formal part over it was time for photographs where the groomsmen were surpirsed at the photographers request to hold Dan and Emma aloft, this caused a bit of hilarity as they tried their best to accomplish this, after 4 or 5 attempts, however, success! And it made for a great photo!

Bride & Groom

Time for a cheeky drink from the Hazlewood Gin Caravan overlooking the stunning Yorkshire countryside, before alighting the steps to the beautifully dressed Great Hall for the wedding breakfast and speeches.

The table centrepieces were some rather spectacular Wysteria trees, conjuring up an outdoor feel to the whole affair.

For the evening reception, the couple had arranged a fun photo booth
